Welcome to the
Excelsior Streetcar Line. Twin City Rapid Transit trolleys once linked
this lakeside resort community to Minneapolis and St. Paul. Especially
during the hot summer months, the streetcar offered a quick and
inexpensive escape to Lake Minnetonka. At Excelsior you could board
one of several steamboats, built and operated by TCRT, for a ride
across the water to towns around the lake or the park on Big Island.
Enjoy a streetcar trip through historic Excelsior
along a half-mile of track built on the former right-of-way of the
Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway. The car stops at our carbarn so
passengers can see other cars in our collection as well as restoration
work in progress. You’ll also view historical exhibits and photos. The
streetcar ride continues to the end of the line where you will see
some of the 110 miles of Lake Minnetonka shoreline.
After your ride, stop at the old Minneapolis and St. Louis station and see the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society displays. Then take a stroll along Water Street and visit some of the many owner occupied shops. Check out the gifts and antiques at Liepold’s or brose the selection at Excelsior Bay Books. Stop for lunch, an ice cream cone, or refreshing drink. Downtown Excelsior offers something for everyone in your family.
